Mount Sinai board honors retirees and tenure recipients; teacher awards and military commitments recognized

The Mount Sinai Union Free School District board on June 17 recognized teachers, staff and students for awards and service, accepted retirements and approved tenure and multi‑year appointments.
Gina Hacker, a high‑school chemistry teacher, presented the American Chemical Society Award to senior Aras Farrell for having one of the highest course averages and the top score on the school’s chemistry Olympiad. Gina Hacker said, “I wanna congratulate him on his hard work and his outstanding performance with this American Chemical Society Award.”
The board honored three students who have committed to the U.S. armed forces. The presentation identified Vincent Cardone (enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps), Nigel Carreras and Sean Kelly (joining the U.S. Navy). The presenter also referenced students Benjamin Frankuez (attending West Point) and Tyler Zara (attending the U.S. Naval Academy).
The board publicly recognized longtime staff members and retirees. Speakers praised John Wilson for more than two decades of support services and holiday outreach, Susan Briscoe (identified in remarks as Miss Briscoe) for leadership in the math department, Donna Shapiro for contributions to the science department, and Tom Duffy for 37 years of service in multiple roles. The board then moved to accept those retirements later in the meeting (see votes summary).
Administrators recognized tenure and multi‑year appointments. The board recorded 10‑year appointments for Donald Magnuson, Caitlin Kennedy and Tracy Marcello and congratulated them on the milestone. The district announced the appointment of Shannon Reacher as a new Spanish teacher.
The board closed the meeting with a reception to honor retiring staff and tenure recipients.
