Council adopts $250,000 budget modification for additional mill-and-overlay street maintenance

The Common Council unanimously approved on June 10 a finance resolution to adopt a 2025 budget modification of about $250,000 for additional hot-mix mill-and-overlay street maintenance.
Council members and public works staff said the city aims to extend pavement life on residential and arterial streets and that last year's lower snow and salt use freed funds for additional work. Staff told council the money would be applied to an estimated two miles (about 20-25 blocks) of standard residential streets, some performed in-house to stretch funds.
Alder Larson asked that Infrastructure & Facilities committee consider whether short one-block stretches that have repeatedly needed patching should be prioritized. Public works staff said they will bring the proposed list of streets (a "wish list" larger than available funds) back to the INF committee for review; final selections are expected to balance pavement condition, underlying utility work (especially where lead service lines are being replaced), drainage, and cost-effectiveness.
Council members noted some locations where current utility work has left streets in poor short-term condition and urged staff to consider addressing those blocks where timely overlay would be practical.
The resolution passed 11-0.
