Parks board approves 14-by-14 mausoleum lot at cemetery, sets price at $3,500

The Parks and Recreation Board voted to approve a proposal to offer 14-by-14 mausoleum lots at the municipal cemetery and set the lot price at $3,500.

Board members discussed a proposed location along the fence by hole 14 of the adjacent golf course and said the area could accommodate about three mausoleums. Jason, who presented the plan, said the 14-by-14 footprint was used to calculate a per-square-foot price based on existing grave pricing and that the resulting figure “came up to just under $3,500,” which the board rounded for an even number.

Board members asked about size and placement. Jason said the board would require a grass buffer around each structure — about 3 to 3.5 feet — so maintenance crews could mow between mausoleums and adjacent graves. The board identified two existing mausoleums in the cemetery, the Randall and Miller mausoleums; Jason said the Miller structure contains full caskets while the Randall mausoleum currently holds cremains.

Discussion also touched on demand and pricing. Board members noted mausoleums are expensive and that the proposed price likely falls between $60,000 and $100,000 for a completed structure, an estimate offered in the meeting; the $3,500 figure covers the lot fee for the 14-by-14 space, not the cost of a completed, installed structure.

After discussion, a voice vote was taken and the board approved the 14-by-14 mausoleum lot and the proposed pricing. The board also discussed leaving detailed design and any additional rules to be handled on a case-by-case basis and agreed to revisit specifics if needed.

The board directed staff to proceed with the lot sizing and pricing as approved and to follow up with the interested family about next steps.
