Superintendent highlights adult-education graduates, special-education review and staff changes

Superintendent Krishawn Swift used Monday’s meeting to note recent district milestones and to provide a brief update on a state special-education review.
Adult education and student honors: Swift highlighted the district’s adult-education and diploma-completion graduates — district staff reported 19 participants at the final ceremony, 29 total GED completions and 33 high-school diplomas this year (16 from Lawrence High, 17 from Free State). He also recognized multiple extracurricular achievements: Free State and Lawrence High theater honors, Free State speech and debate successes (including a national extemporaneous speaking champion), state track champions and yearbook recognition.
Special-education complaint and state review: Swift said a formal complaint had been filed alleging IEPs were not being implemented this spring, and that a Kansas State Department of Education special-education investigator "determined that there were no findings indicating that students' needs are being met and IEPs are being implemented in Lawrence Public Schools." Swift reiterated that families with concerns should contact district staff and that the district uses complaints — even those determined unsubstantiated — as learning opportunities.
Staffing and personnel notes: Swift welcomed Nikki Nauman as board clerk and executive assistant to the superintendent and congratulated Jana Craig Hare, executive director of curriculum and instruction, on her selection as incoming superintendent of another district. He reminded the public that district offices and buildings are closed on Fridays and federal holidays (Juneteenth, July 4).
Housekeeping votes: At the start of the meeting the board approved the agenda for the June 9 meeting and later approved the consent agenda. The motions passed unanimously in each roll call (motion to approve agenda: 7–0; consent agenda: 7–0).
