Ouachita Parish schools raise visitor meal prices to cover rising costs

The Ouachita Parish School Board on May 20 approved an increase in visitor meal prices, raising breakfast to $4 per person and lunch to $6 per person. The change, approved by voice vote with no recorded opposition, applies only to visitor meals; student and teacher meal prices were not increased.
Nutrition services staff told the board the change was needed because the district calculates an annual “plate cost” that includes equipment, labor and other operating expenses. "The cost to produce a lunch this year was $4.80. The average cost for breakfast was $3.25," the nutrition services presenter said, and the district had been charging less than the production cost for visitor meals.
The presenter said the visitor price increase was required for the district’s application to participate in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program and that the district is not raising student or employee meal prices at this time.
Board members moved promptly to put the change in place; staff said they will update point-of-sale systems and public notices before implementation.
