Youth group asks Encinitas council to support state bill banning disposable vapes

Barbara Gordon, an adult advisor for The Changers youth group, told the council the students requested the city consider a resolution in support of AB 762, arguing disposable vapes are a public-health threat and an environmental hazard because they contain lithium batteries and plastics that often end up in school grounds and waterways. "AB 762 builds on recent legislation that classified some marijuana vaping waste as hazardous," Gordon said. "A formal resolution from the city of Encinitas could help move this critical legislation forward."
Gordon cited national estimates and public-health statements about youth vaping and urged the council to refer the request to staff so the matter could be considered and, if appropriate, return as a formal council item. Council indicated it could refer the request to staff for consideration and follow-up; no formal resolution was considered or adopted at the meeting.
The council took the request as oral communications and did not take immediate action; staff may return the issue for further consideration under council referral procedures.
