The School Committee voted July 11 to adopt a package of policy updates recommended by the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) and to approve a set of student-conduct policies.
The committee approved updates to governance and personnel-related policies including BBA (School Committee powers and duties), BBBA/BBBB (member qualifications and oath of office), GCBA (professional staff salary schedule) and GCBB (employment of principals). Committee members said the MASC edits were largely formatting and clarifying language; one addition clarified required receipt of an ethics-commission summary for newly elected members.
Separately, the committee approved student-related policies (grouped and read as presented): JH (student absence and excuses), JHD (exclusions and exemptions from school attendance), JIC (student discipline), JICFA (prohibition of hazing) and related anti-bullying and search policies (JICFB, JIH) and JII (student complaints and grievances). A committee member said counsel had vetted the reads prior to the vote.
The policies were approved in two motions: one to adopt the MASC-recommended governance/personnel changes and another to accept the student-conduct policies as presented. Both motions passed by voice vote; the record shows "Aye" votes but no roll-call tallies.
