TPWA approves $68,000 Vermeer trencher purchase to speed fiber installation

The Tuttle Public Works Authority voted to purchase a Vermeer RXT450 trencher for $68,000 to replace a much older trencher the department said had mounting reliability and size limitations.
Public works director Tim told the board the existing trencher (a late-1990s model acquired from state surplus) frequently sits idle because it is too large for tighter, denser subdivisions such as Hollabrook. The new machine would be small enough to operate in confined residential streets, speed fiber and conduit installation, reduce reliance on excavators for sectional digs, and cut overall installation disruption.
The board approved the purchase and said staff would attempt to surplus the old unit via auction once the new trencher arrived. Members noted used-equipment searches and dealer availability before approving the new purchase to avoid extended lead-time issues for fiber projects.
