Council discussion focused on the major cost drivers, with members pointing to the sheriff's contract and the town's garbage collection contract as two large, potentially volatile line items. One council member said the garbage contract and the sheriff's contract comprise roughly half the town's budget and warned that contract renewals could increase future costs.
Council members also compared Indian Trail's proposed tax rate with neighboring jurisdictions. A council member noted that, despite a lower tax rate this year, homeowners may pay more because of revaluations that raised property assessments.
Motion and vote: A motion to approve the FY2025'26 budget ordinance with a tax rate of 17 cents per $100 passed 3 to 1. The record shows one council member absent at the vote. No other formal amendments to the ordinance were recorded on the floor.
The council's adoption of the ordinance completes the town's primary fiscal planning step for the coming year; staff said auditors will begin preliminary field work and that spending controls for the close of the current fiscal year are in effect.
