City to install automated water meters at more than 145,000 homes starting 2024

City staff described a multi-year rollout of automated residential water meters called "TrueReads," starting in 2024 and continuing over the next four years, covering more than 145,000 residential locations across Tulsa.
The presentation said the new meters will reduce the need for property access to read meters, cut meter-reading costs, lower employee injuries, eliminate estimated bills and use technology the city describes as more environmentally friendly. Residents will receive advance notification: an online map will show neighborhoods where crews are working; a door hanger will be left one to two weeks before installation; and the contractor will knock and make day-of contact.
Crews will briefly interrupt water service (up to 30 minutes) during the swap; residents were asked to run their water afterward to clear any cloudiness. As part of each meter swap crews will perform a lead service line inspection and report results on the online map. The presentation noted city staff do not believe many lead service lines remain, but the inspection will document any that are found.
The presentation referred residents to cityoftulsa.org/truereads for FAQs and an installation map. No vote was required; this was an informational rollout plan presented to the commission.
