Library director reports summer reading, ESL classes, scholarship and staffing updates; council receives report

Eric Castro, Carpinteria's city librarian, presented the library's monthly report on programs, outreach and staffing at the June 9 meeting; council voted to receive and file the report.
Key program notes presented by Castro: - Summer reading program: An eight-week program with weekly reading logs themed around the planets beginning with Mercury and running through Pluto; organizers distributed about 450 bilingual (English/Spanish) children's folders and plan weekly events including a bubble party on June 13 at 5 p.m., family movie nights and science activities. - Partnerships and giveaways: Sponsors include Island Packers and several cultural institutions; raffle prizes will include whale-watching tickets and museum admissions. - Knit with Pride: Weekly knitting workshops in June using rainbow colors to mark Pride Month. - ESL and workforce programs: A new Saturday basic ESL class will be piloted this summer; the library is partnering with Women's Economic Ventures to offer a Spanish-language financial-empowerment class (12 registered so far) and will evaluate continuation. - Literacy tutoring: The read-aloud/tutoring program has 17 active tutor-learner pairs and expansion is planned; library staff noted space constraints as demand grows. - Operations: Partial temporary closure for building tile and plumbing work; patio refresh planned; new computer reservation software to improve patron access.
