Perryton ISD honors FCCLA members, announces scholarships and lists honor graduates

Perryton Independent School District trustees recognized Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students and other graduating seniors during the meeting's recognition segment.

Teacher sponsor Mrs. Tanner and several students described projects that advanced through region and state competition; some students qualified for national competition. Projects covered community outreach and skill-based work, including efforts to support children served by Panhandle Crisis Center, a fundraising effort that raised $400 for four families, STEM and science tutoring visits to elementary students, and a career-investigation project completed through a local hospital.

The board announced scholarship awards tied to competition placings: two students who placed at state in event management received $1,000 scholarships to Texas Tech University that the district accepted on their behalf, and another student earned a $500 scholarship for a cupcake-presentation competition, bringing that student’s total from that contest to $2,500. The board said it has accepted the scholarships for the students when they are seniors.

The trustees read a roll call of honor graduates and named Lindsey Valenzuela as valedictorian and Caden Rodriguez as salutatorian. The board also recognized teachers of the year for several campuses: Jimmy Lewis (Littiwark campus), Dari Harris (PHS), Kevin Black (junior high) and Jessica Shunegota (Wright campus). Two staff resignations were announced: Maritza Vargas (Williams nurse) and Lois Hamill (speech pathologist, special education).

Board members praised the work of sponsor teachers, bus drivers and volunteers who supported travel to competitions.

The recognition segment concluded with commendations for students advancing academically and for staff who led extracurricular programs.
