Moab tourism board forms subcommittee to reconcile TRT and dashboard data with state figures

Board members on June 10, 2025, directed staff to form a small subcommittee to reconcile transient-room-tax (TRT) and sales-tax numbers in board reports with figures published by the Utah State Tax Commission and to review the Moab Office of Tourism data dashboard for errors.
"If you just go by base sales tax, the number from the state for 2023 was 2,800,000.0, and the numbers here is 1.6," said Howard during the meeting as he identified mismatches between state-published monthly numbers and the financials presented to the board. Howard said the TRT numbers in the packet also did not reconcile with state figures.
Staff and board members agreed the goal is accuracy and transparency. The board asked Steven Walls and Wendell to work with Ben and any other staff needed to identify the components of the presented figures, produce an agreed set of numbers, and report back. Members proposed a short-term subcommittee to complete reconciliation and provide corrected figures to the board by the August meeting so the board can use validated numbers for budgeting and TRT allocation discussion.
Board members also discussed the Moab Office of Tourism dashboard, which draws from multiple feeds; members asked that the dashboard be taken offline until data errors are resolved and asked staff to coordinate with Ben and external vendors (where applicable) to correct the underlying feeds. Volunteers Howard and Alex agreed to participate in the drill-down with Ben.
