Commissioner Covey honored for national work on Habitat Conservation Plan coalition

The Williamson County Commissioners Court recognized Commissioner Valerie Covey for her leadership in the National Habitat Conservation Plan Coalition, a coalition that promotes large-scale habitat conservation plans as a tool to balance development and endangered-species protections.
Josh Renner of Williamson County Parks presented the recognition on behalf of the coalition, saying Covey helped found the group and served as its president while it grew from a small, regionally focused network into a national organization. "Valerie served as coalition president and has guided them through the process of becoming a nonprofit organization and has led the growth of the community of practice from a small group in 2015 to a gathering of hundreds of HCP practitioners nationwide," Renner said.
Covey said the coalition grew from discussions with practitioners in California and other states and credited local staff for contributing to a plan amendment now underway in Williamson County.
The ceremony included remarks from coalition members and a brief photo opportunity; there was no formal court action attached to the recognition.
