At the start of the session, the board followed Civil Service Rule 2.1 on order of business and proceeded to elect a chair after the previous chair’s term ended. Board Member Jimenez moved to nominate Member Cabrera and a second was recorded; members voted “aye” and the board confirmed Cabrera as chair. "Thank you to my colleagues, and welcome to my 2 newest colleagues here on the board," Cabrera said after assuming the chair.
The board took note of personnel items included in the meeting packet: a memorandum from Angela Roberts, Director of the Human Resources Department, notifying that Leonardo Perez Diaz, Waste Collector Operator 2, will return to Automotive Equipment Operator 1 effective June 2, 2025; and a military leave request from Police Officer Vanessa Moreno for unpaid leave from July 1 through July 31, 2025. Both notifications were placed on the record; the military leave was moved and approved by voice vote.
On disciplinary and hearing matters, the board granted a continuance for a grievance hearing requested by counsel for Wesleyan Louis Francois; the city’s chief labor attorney indicated no objection to that continuance. The board also granted a continuance for an appeal hearing on behalf of Police Officer Marquise Williams while the Fraternal Order of Police and the department seek a resolution.
Board staff reviewed the hearings-pending list and noted the next board meeting date as June 24, when three hearings were already scheduled. The board concluded with a motion to adjourn that passed by voice vote.
