Carson City Arts and Culture supervisor reports meet-the-orchestra event, SB118 funding, and US Capitol tree ornament project

Anna Freeman, Carson City Arts and Culture Supervisor, reported program updates to the Arts and Culture Commission, including youth-focused events, ongoing grant funding and near-term public activities.
Freeman said the inaugural "meet the orchestra" event on May 30 invited every elementary-grade student in Carson City to an orchestra concert; the program was funded through Nevada Senate Bill 118 of the 2023 legislative session under the Department of Health and Human Services priority for mental and emotional health. Freeman said that funding will continue through the next year and that staff will look for a sponsor to sustain the program after 2026.
She also reported that Arts Enrichment Camp, hosted by the Sierra Arts Foundation, had just begun and would run through the week. Freeman said a naming survey for the building at 801 North Street (sometimes called the Art Building) will be posted and that proposed names honoring living or deceased people must include a bio or resume for consideration.
Freeman said Nevada is providing the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree this year; the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is supplying the tree and the Arts and Culture Department will host free family art activities on July 12 and July 19 to create ornaments for the national display. Freeman noted the project seeks roughly 10,000 ornaments and invited community participation.
Freeman also outlined two agenda items that followed this report—the Redevelopment Revolving Fund requests and the Out of the Box traffic-signal-box public-art program—and described sponsorship and selection processes for future expansions of the traffic-signal-box program.
