Board rejects owners' request for more time, orders demolition of 1815 Adamson Drive

The San Antonio Building Standards Board voted unanimously to order demolition of the fire‑damaged property at 1815 Adamson Drive within 30 days, after hearing pleas from the owner's sons for more time to clear title and market the lot for sale.

Ryan Garza, dangerous premises officer, summarized staff findings including extensive fire, smoke and water damage and exposed, charred rafters, joists and ceiling members. Garza said no scope of work, proof of funds, letter of credit or engineer’s report had been provided and that the property is not eligible for historic designation. Garza recommended demolition under City Code Article 8, Chapter 6.

Solomon Franklin and Ornan Franklin, sons of the property owner Charles A. Franklin (deceased), told the board they had obtained clear title and sought six months to market the lot to builders or otherwise raise funds to rebuild. "We would like to get six months, and I don't mind personal reporting, giving reports every 30 days to let you know where we are," Solomon Franklin said. He also said the family had arranged a title company to clear ownership and believed parts of the structure might be salvageable.

Boardmembers noted the property's hazardous condition and the time elapsed since the fire; several members asked what proof of funds or concrete timeline the family could provide. After discussion, Boardmember Robert Tapia moved to declare the property a public nuisance and order demolition within 30 days; Robert Behnke seconded and the board voted 5-0.

Staff told the family they could coordinate with the assigned code officer but the board emphasized the immediate public‑safety considerations that supported a 30‑day demolition order.
