Finance committee approves transfer to buy radios and cover bus repairs for transit fleet

The Finance Committee on June 4 recommended a fund transfer that reallocates Federal/State PM grant funds from salaries and benefits to cover bus repairs and radios for the municipal transit fleet.
Ajimendu, deputy director of the Transportation Department, told the committee the transfer covers bills for bus repairs and radios for buses. "We've got 2 electric buses," Ajimendu said, and the procurement of electric and additional smaller buses meant the city needed extra radios: two electric buses required additional radios beyond one‑for‑one replacements, funds used to buy six smaller buses for a GoTime service require four new radios, and two additional smaller electric buses recently ordered will require more radios. Ajimendu said the transfer provides enough to equip the fleet's buses with the radios they need to communicate with dispatch.
Committee members asked whether sufficient salary and benefits balance existed for the transfer; staff said the department worked with the budget team and that funds were available. A motion to give a favorable recommendation to FT 11 25 passed by voice vote.
Staff said the transfer will be processed to cover repairs and radio purchases and that the transportation department coordinated with the Maryland Transit Administration on bus procurements.
