San Marcos proclaims June 2025 LGBTQ Pride Month; organizers say main celebrations will occur later in summer

Mayor Jane Hughson issued a proclamation declaring June 2025 as LGBTQ Pride Month in San Marcos and called on residents to "support, understand, and speak for tolerance, justice, equality, dignity, and appreciation for all of our citizens."

The proclamation recognized the historical and cultural contributions of LGBTQ residents and noted that while June is nationally observed, the city and local groups often stage larger Pride events at different times of the year to coincide with the university calendar.

A community organizer, identified in the meeting as Sylvia, said organizers will repeat events later in the summer to align with student return and community participation. "We're actually gonna do this, like, 3 times. Okay. Today's just a test run. August 5, we'll have all the organizations back in town," Sylvia said, and described additional events the weekend after Labor Day that include a pageant and a "Colors of the Rainbow" program.

Gloria Salazar, co-founder of the Central Cultural Espaf1a de San Marcos, said her organization stands as an ally to LGBTQ organizations in the city. An unnamed PFLAG board member who spoke at the meeting said they are "here for the LGBTQ community, through and through."

Speakers emphasized the importance of visibility and community support; the proclamation itself is ceremonial recognition and does not create new city programs or funding.

Organizers asked residents to watch for local event announcements and said the main in-person Pride activities in San Marcos will take place in August and during the weekend after Labor Day.
