The State Public Charter School Authority voted May 30 to grant a good-cause exemption and approve Do and B Arts Academy of Excellence’s amendment to open with kindergarten through eighth grade, subject to a set of conditions the school must meet in the first week of June.
SPCSA staff had recommended approval based on the original charter approval and recent public comment supporting the school’s capacity to fill the additional seats. Shambrian Trego, a school representative, told the authority the school had already enrolled 161 students and had roughly 222 applications in process; she said many applications were pending documentation such as IDs and would likely convert to fully enrolled seats.
The board’s conditional approval requires the school to submit by June 1 evidence of at least 60 fully enrolled students for the 2025–26 year and a fully executed lease for the facility to meet the school’s needs for the coming year. The school must also provide a board-approved final budget that reflects confirmed enrollment and the cost of the identified facility by June 8, and must complete SPCSA’s preopening process for new charter schools.
Board members voiced support for the expansion but emphasized the short, nonnegotiable timelines. The motion to approve was moved by Member Shontay Rosales and seconded by Member Iverdaba; the board approved the motion by voice vote.
