Board hears progress on strategic plan priorities: student well-being and academic opportunities
Summary
District staff reported progress on student well-being and academic-opportunity priorities, including universal social-emotional screening (SABERS), expansion of Universal Design for Learning (IGNITE), third-grade reading gains, and growth in ninth-grade on-track indicators.
District staff updated the board on two strategic-plan priority areas: student well-being (priority 1) and academic opportunities (priority 2).
On student well-being, executive director of special services highlighted implementation of the SABERS universal screener for social, academic and emotional/behavioral risk and said the district is moving into a second phase that uses strengths-based, personalized goals. Staff reported the district's first basic-needs resource fair was successful and a resource-hub advisory group is forming to support families requiring additional supports.
On academic opportunities, staff said student outcomes are trending in the desired direction: third-grade reading and ninth-grade on-track metrics showed measurable growth. District leaders described a new Tiered Teams tracking tool that allows building leaders to monitor student progress in real time and intervene earlier. The common course catalog effort continues to standardize course titles and credit-earning pathways; next year work will expand to electives.
The board asked for next steps and more granular data. Director Gallagher asked that future monitoring products disaggregate outcomes by building and student subgroup; staff confirmed the requested scorecard is in development and that a BIPOC-focused scorecard will track core milestones including third-grade reading, ninth-grade on-track and graduation/persistence measures.
Ending: Staff said they will continue engagement with students and families in the fall and bring a refreshed scorecard and monitoring materials to the June 10 meeting for further review.
