Workforce Ignite Lenoir expands paid internships and apprenticeships to 44 students this summer

The board heard a presentation on Workforce Ignite Lenoir, the district's career-education initiative, which staff said has expanded paid student internships and apprenticeships this year.
Doctor Amy Jones (presenter credit in the meeting packet) introduced the program and Workforce Ignite Lenoir staff reported that 44 students will participate in paid work-based learning at five different sites this summer, compared with 16 paid opportunities the previous summer. Partners listed in the presentation included FRC East, Kinston Public Works, Smithfield Foods (youth apprenticeship), Crown Equipment Corporation and district placements. Crown pprenticeship opportunities were described as including a guaranteed job offer upon successful program completion and high-school graduation.
District staff said career development coordinators at each high school provide students with career interest inventories, resume and interview preparation, and mock interviews. The program also partners with Lenoir Community College and local manufacturing and economic development bodies to align internships with postsecondary and employer needs.
Program staff invited board members to a student signing day event on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at central services to celebrate participating students and employer partners.
