Commissioners approve CARES Act CDBG amendments to purchase food and replace appliances for local shelters

At a public hearing on June 3, county staff proposed amending CDBG CARES Act allocations to provide one-time assistance to two local homeless shelters.
Lynn Wright from the county’s office said the State Department of Housing Community Development Block Grant Program had reclaimed CARES Act funds available for eligible uses such as food programs and homeless shelter needs. Staff reached out to the two local shelters — Diakonia and Samaritan Shelter — and requested lists of immediate needs that align with CDBG eligibility.
The staff recommendation was for $55,079.30 (Diakonia) to purchase pantry food, bottled water, hygiene products, first aid supplies and other essentials, and $24,678 for Samaritan Shelter to replace kitchen appliances and purchase pantry food. Wright said both organizations have been reliable grant partners in the past. The public hearing drew no public commenters.
Commissioner Bertino moved to proceed; Commissioner Bunting seconded, and the board voted unanimously to approve the amendments and the use of the funds.
Staff will proceed with grant amendment paperwork and the procurement steps necessary to supply the shelters with the items requested.
