Oroville recognizes service clubs; local groups announce spring events and scholarships

Oroville community leaders and volunteers were recognized at a city event where local service clubs accepted awards and announced a slate of spring activities and student scholarships.

Representatives from the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1747, the Fellows Club, Sunrise Rotary and the Oroville Masonic Lodge addressed attendees and described upcoming events, volunteer opportunities and youth programs.

A representative of the American Legion noted the group now has four branches represented in Oroville—the post, the auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders—and described their community and youth activities. A speaker associated with the American Legion listed May events, including an informational booth at Feather Fiesta Days on May 10 and a motorcycle show with raffles at Feather Falls Casino on May 17.

A representative of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1747 accepted the city—s recognition on behalf of the post and thanked residents. “On behalf of VFW Post 1747, we accept the award and are proud to be a participant of this great community,” the representative said.

The VFW speaker also invited veterans and guests to the post canteen at 1901 Elgin Street in Southside Oroville and noted regular post meetings take place at the Veterans Memorial Building at 2374 Montgomery Street on the first Thursday of each month.

The Fellows Club, described in the remarks as Oroville—s longest-running lunch club (organized in 1922), said it sponsors the annual Scholastic Achievement Awards. “The club gives $500 to each of the top 10 seniors at both high schools and also at Prospect,” said the club secretary, citing the group—s scholarship program.

Bill Black, a member of the Oroville Sunrise Rotary, said the club conducts monthly programs and community donations, including support for the SPCA, the Salvation Army—s Easter egg hunt and veteran blankets delivered to the veterans hospital in Reno. “On behalf of the Oroville Sunrise Rotary, we—re proud to accept this honor,” Black said.

Speakers also reminded the public about the city—s Memorial Day activities. According to remarks at the event, volunteers will place flags at the district cemetery beginning at 6 a.m. on May 26 (as stated), with a formal ceremony at noon and removal of flags at 4 p.m. Organizers asked community members to help place flags on gravestones.

Event organizers closed by thanking volunteers and saying hard copies of the presentation would be available on the table and posted to the city website.
