ARB approves Lazy Dog restaurant elevations, including tower feature and takeout access

The Village of Wellington Architectural Review Board on May 28 approved amended elevations and minor signage adjustments for a Lazy Dog restaurant in the Lotus Wellington development, with staff recommendations.
Staff presented the request (petition 2025-0001-ARB) as an amended elevation set and small sign-area adjustments; the east facade sign was noted at 86.29 square feet. Damien Newell of the planning division entered the file into the record and noted the proposal combines two earlier approvals from 2022 and 2024.
Applicant Jared Taylor said the revised design reflects post‑COVID operational changes and cost considerations. He said takeout and delivery have grown in importance and that the takeout door will improve operational flow by keeping delivery drivers out of the front entrance. Taylor said the revised design restores a tower feature the applicant considers central to the brand, explaining the company "wanted to bring that back" after an earlier value-engineered design removed the tower for cost reasons.
Taylor also told the board the operation will remain a full‑service, sit‑down restaurant with on‑site alcoholic beverage sales and a dog‑friendly patio, and that ownership remains the same.
A board member asked whether the tower height complies with village standards; staff confirmed it does not exceed the code height limit. Committee members asked about the previously proposed beer garden; the applicant said the beer‑garden element has been removed because it is "not on brand" for Lazy Dog.
Board members raised no objections to the materials, color palette, or the revised signage; staff said most signs actually decrease in area and that the east facade sign is a minor increase to 86.29 square feet, within the requested deviations. The board moved and seconded approval according to staff recommendations and voted to approve the petition.
The approval is subject to the conditions in the staff report, including that specific sign designs and any brand‑standard fonts or logos not covered by the approved template would return to the ARB for review during permitting.
The applicant and staff said the revised elevations are intended to provide a stronger brand presence while improving operational flow; no public comments were made on this item during the meeting.
The motion to approve (petition 2025-0001-ARB) passed by voice vote.
