Canton awards $3.26 million contract for Cherry Hill Village Town Square phase 1 and hires OHM for construction administration

Canton Township approved the construction contract for Phase 1 of the Cherry Hill Village Town Square and awarded construction administration services to OHM Advisors on May 13.
Clerk Seager moved — and Treasurer Slavens supported — a motion to reallocate previously committed fund balances (including ARPA‑related funds set aside in 2022) to help offset the project and to award the Phase 1 construction contract to Fonson Company, Inc. The board approved a total project budget of $3,256,707.71, which includes the base contract, selected pathway alternatives and a 10% contingency. The contract recommendation followed a competitive bid and responsible‑contracting evaluation process that included interviews of the highest‑scoring firms.
Board members and staff emphasized the project goal: to activate the area around Cherry Hill School and create a town square with site work, utilities, a restroom building, a pedestrian bridge, landscaping and restoration. Director Waffey described the award as the final major construction step to complete the town square and said the township expects the project to be finished within about a year.
The board separately approved an amount not to exceed $426,250 to OHM Advisors for construction administration and oversight of the Town Square phase. Staff said OHM has guided earlier visioning, design and engineering and will provide on-site oversight, finish design work and construction coordination.
Trustee Michael questioned funding sources and deadlines; staff confirmed much of Phase 1 is being paid with Wayne County ARPA funds and noted the project timeline aligns with ARPA spending requirements. The board voted in favor of both the construction award and the OHM contract.
