At first reading on Tuesday the Brookings City Council heard a proposal to amend the 2025 budget to fund public improvements along Capitol Street that are intended to support ongoing private‑sector development at the Marketplace.
Public Works Director John Thompson explained staff recommends transferring $200,000 from the general fund economic development reserves to the Marketplace capital project fund for a sewer line extension and $260,000 from the second‑penny capital improvements reserve for paving and street improvements along Capitol Street. Thompson said the $260,000 will be reimbursed from proceeds when the city sells the adjacent city‑owned property north of the site.
“The $260,000 from the second penny capital improvement fund will be reimbursed upon future sale of the city owned property directly north of the site,” Thompson said during the presentation.
Council discussed the project briefly; no public comments were recorded on the first reading. Staff indicated second reading and final action will be scheduled for the June 10 council meeting.
If approved, the amendment will fund sewer and street work intended to make the parcels developable and to support broader economic development the council has been promoting around the Marketplace site.
