Commission approves monument parking sign on Broadway with lighting limits

The Historic Design and Review Commission approved a request to install a monument parking sign and reface an existing parking sign panel for a property on Broadway, subject to height, area and illumination restrictions consistent with the city’s Unified Development Code.

The property owner, Kenneth Huey, and sign representative Bobby Bozarth (Signs LLC) presented a revised design that converted an internally illuminated cabinet sign into a monument sign. The commission approved a monument sign not to exceed 6 feet in height and 50 square feet in total sign area. The commission approved internal illumination only if the applicant can meet the UDC standard that prevents glare at the property boundary and does not exceed an illumination level of 6 lux at the property line. Commissioners also approved the reface of an existing rear parking-panel sign provided it does not include business logos or branding (parking direction signage only).

During the hearing the panel discussed the illumination approach and the UDC standard on brightness and glare. Bobby Bozarth confirmed the monument sign would be an internally illuminated LED cabinet with a metal skirt; he told commissioners the overall height including the skirt would be approximately 6 feet and the visible cabinet face would be 4 by 6 feet. The commission’s motion tied any internal illumination to compliance with the UDC’s glare and lux limits.

The motion to approve the monument sign with the stated limits and the non-branded parking panel passed by roll call. Staff will work with the applicant to finalize the details and prepare the approval letter and action items.
