Port Jervis students, staff and volunteers honored for Special Olympics; district to host 2027 event

The Port Jervis City School District on May 21 recognized students, coaches and volunteers for recent participation in the Orange County Special Olympics and announced the district will host the Special Olympics in 2027.
Tanya Duriday, assistant superintendent for student services, told the board the program has grown since district participation began: "We went from 7 students to 23 this year," she said, praising faculty, staff and community volunteers who supported athletes across elementary and middle-school teams. District presenters said teams competed this year in Goshen and took home medals and ribbons.
A parent who addressed the board, identified in the meeting as Mrs. Lane, described the event as a landmark experience for her children, saying the athletes' "faces as they went up to get their ribbon and medal was truly priceless." Tanya Duriday and other staff thanked coaches and volunteers by name during the presentation.
Presenters also said the district will host the Special Olympics in 2027 and asked for continued district support in future years. The board applauded the students and volunteers and moved on to other agenda items.
