Library to modernize public computers after Monarch audit; board to consider purchase timing

The board heard technology and computer updates following an audit by the Monarch Library System. Monarch identified that some machines presently on the public network should be moved to the staff network and vice versa. Monarch will inspect switches and hardware and provide a final analysis.

Library staff reported that the public machines are about six years old and that the library currently operates 16 public computers. The director said he planned to reduce public stations to nine new public computers; staff estimated about $700 per machine (hardware only), with monitors and other peripherals adding to the cost. A prior plan to purchase gaming PCs (budgeted around $4,500) remains under consideration but may be delayed or reallocated to address the immediate need for up-to-date public machines.

Board members urged timing the purchase to take advantage of vendor pricing and availability; meeting participants noted that Dell rebranding and market fluctuations mean prices change rapidly. Staff were asked to prepare a short proposal showing costs, timing, and suggested funding sources so the board can consider the purchase before the fall and align upgrades with planned Windows updates and wireless/access-point replacement work.
