Board declines to add expanded coach-training mandates; keeps reporting to existing processes

Richmond Community Schools trustees reviewed proposed legislative updates relating to coach training and reporting to the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA).
Staff presented several drafting options that would either add required training for some athletic roles or leave the district’s existing approach in place. Trustees discussed which option would best align with state law and district practice; members raised concerns about over-prescriptive language that might create liability if the board adopted requirements it did not consistently implement.
After discussion, the board reached consensus not to adopt additional mandated training language in the policy at this time. One trustee summarized the concern: having a policy that requires an action but is not followed could increase legal exposure. Staff said they would edit the draft to remove the optional additions and bring a clean version back for formal consideration at the next board meeting.
The discussion also touched on required reporting to the IHSAA and state agencies in instances of suspected or proven misconduct, and staff confirmed that reporting to licensure authorities and other state bodies remains a statutory requirement.
