Residents raise ethics, budgeting, safety and service concerns in public comment period

Multiple residents used the public-comment period to raise a variety of issues including local government accountability, housing affordability and taxes, national budget concerns, safety and local services.

Shelby Bleeker criticized repeated public-complaint campaigns targeting council members and urged the council to weigh facts rather than "thin facts and out of context pictures," citing local income and ownership statistics in an appeal to context. Cindy Couture suggested broadening the town's business-spotlight selection process to involve peer groups rather than a single decisionmaker; staff responded that veteran and business spotlights are chosen by committees and departments, not the mayor.

Other speakers included Susan Degenaro, who urged the council to ask Representative Schweikert to oppose a proposed federal budget she said would cut social programs; Wendy Dockel and others expressed frustration about hit-and-run incidents and raised public-safety concerns; Steve Baggio suggested a lighting/alert plan for Flag Day and public emergency notifications for fire season; Laurie Troller asked staff to fix searchability problems for posted council transcripts. Several speakers urged civility and noted pride in Fountain Hills' public spaces.

Council and staff responded to several items on the spot — staff confirmed selection procedures for spotlights, said the town will investigate the transcript searchability and will follow up on Palomino Boulevard correspondence — and asked for follow-up from staff on outstanding resident requests. The comments did not produce formal council action at this meeting.
