Planning director says high school remains on schedule; comprehensive plan and park, plaza projects ahead

Planning Director Jim told the City Council the department has completed multiple visible improvements and is focused on a set of projects and planning efforts for FY26, including the new high school, park upgrades and a citywide comprehensive planning process.
Jim said the new high school construction remains on schedule and that construction is planned to be complete before the end of the calendar year so students can occupy the facility after the holiday break. "It is on schedule," he said in response to a council question. He noted that playing fields and other finishing tasks remain part of the near‑term work.
The planning department listed completed projects over the prior year—James Park playground, Sacred Heart tennis courts and improvements at River Island Park—and said it will continue phases of work at James Park (including Caldwell Tower and an amphitheater design) and environmental compliance work at River Island. The department also plans Dexter Plaza rehabilitation and a nearby parking lot rebuild with green infrastructure to improve stormwater management and add vegetation and shade.
Jim described the recently launched comprehensive plan process: a public survey is live and the department plans robust public engagement during the next fiscal year to gather input and shape a multi‑year growth and land‑use strategy. He also said the city acquired properties at the end of last year from the former "Azram" site and will support development proposals for housing, commercial uses and parking.
On pedestrian safety, Jim referenced the completed Safe Streets for All planning process and said a consultant is available at no cost to prepare a grant application to move priority implementation projects forward, with a particular focus around the new high school and anticipated pre‑K–8 school.
Jim said planning will keep working with public works, code enforcement and other departments on permitting, online application rollout and tree planting efforts tied to broader quality‑of‑life goals.
