Board approves consent items, excuses absences and adopts second reading of graduation‑related policy; board opposes legislative package

The board voted to excuse the absences of four members for the meeting. The motion to excuse those members was moved by Magnuson and seconded by Dr. Holman; the roll call recorded five ayes (Paul, Coleman, Magnuson, Thielen, Burdenberger).
The board adopted the consent agenda on a motion by Mr. Thielen, seconded by Miss Full; the roll call on the consent agenda recorded five ayes (Magnuson, Elin, Erdenberger, Poe, Coleman) and the chair declared the motion passed.
On an action item brought from the Policy Committee, the board approved the second reading of Policy 05/2005. The item came from committee and required no second; roll call votes recorded Burdenberger, Bull, Coleman, Magnuson and Thielen voting aye (5‑0 recorded).
Following a legislative committee report, the board voted to change its position to oppose LB306, a bill that has been amended to include multiple K–12 provisions, and LB653, which the committee had described as expanding transportation obligations tied to special education. The committee recommended opposition because the consolidated bill package now includes provisions the district previously opposed (including a superintendent pay change and a provision allowing suits seeking attorney’s fees, the committee said). The recorded vote on the committee recommendation was Healy (aye), Hardenberger (aye), Poe (no), Coleman (aye) and Magnuson (aye); the motion carried with four ayes and one no.
Board members were told the legislature’s session is scheduled to end June 9 and that the large package bills could be further amended; the legislative committee said it may take additional positions as bills are consolidated but indicated existing opposition covers the provisions currently of concern.
The board also received a Head Start community assessment report (receipt only) and adjourned at 6:59 p.m.
