Edward Stone students showcase year-round activities and CTE visits at board meeting

Three students from Edward Stone Middle School addressed the Burlington Community School District board on May 19 to describe activities, programs and schedule changes at the middle school.
Eighth-grader Raina Brennaman, seventh-graders Aubrey Mason and Elise Pettit described attending CTE classes at the high school, and cited culinary and firefighting demonstrations as experiences that helped them consider future classes. The students noted sports participation (volleyball, basketball, track), two dances and fundraisers and described a volunteer trip to Paws Animal Shelter that two of the students presented at a statewide competition, where they won first place.
Student presenters described a new digital hall-pass system (Minga) that records hall-pass requests and time out of class and a "Win Time" period at the start of the day that provides homework support and allows teachers protected collaboration time. They said the school also staged a "student spotlight" event where families and community members viewed themed projects and artifacts.
Students said Edward Stone had offered events such as "Build My Future" where students tried job-related activities and a Finance Park visit tied to Junior Achievement curriculum to learn budgeting. Presenters encouraged incoming middle school students to get involved in sports and activities.
The board thanked the students and invited them to lead parts of future welcome events.
