Norton Board of Control approves AEDs for three parks and annual police vehicle lease

Norton Board of Control voted unanimously Monday, May 19, to buy three automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for Columbia Woods Park, Royal Oak Park and Fraser Park and to award an annual vehicle-lease agreement for the Norton Police Department to Enterprise Fleet Management.
The AED purchase was approved in an amount not to exceed $7,572, with the board indicating the purchase will be paid from the city’s OP area settlement fund. Board members said the AEDs respond to a safety need for youth sports and other events at the parks.
A parks staff member described how the devices and cabinets will be secured and used: “So the way they work, you have to have a cell phone. You will call the number that will be there. That'll be a number to dispatch. Dispatch will give you a code, and then that's how you open the box. That's how we protect the unit.” The staff member also addressed training and lay rescuer use, saying, “They're easy. You don't you you just put them on and you, and you know, now you don't even, you don't even breathe. It's it's you're just compressing.” The board discussed additional park safety measures, including installing wood bollards near the Columbia Woods football field to prevent vehicles from entering the play area.
Council members linked the timing of the AED purchase to youth-sports requirements. A parks staff member said the youth football league Norton participates in now requires AEDs as part of league agreements, which accelerated the purchase.
On the vehicle lease, the board approved an annual agreement with Enterprise Fleet Management not to exceed $94,750. A city official noted the current budget includes $135,000 for two cruisers; a council member asked whether that budgeted figure includes equipment. Board members said the item will go to the full council for further consideration that evening.
