Carmel-by-the-Sea will have one public-works staff member on duty every Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend to monitor maintenance in the village, and will place porta-potties and extra trash dumpsters along Scenic Avenue and the Del Mar parking lot for Memorial Day weekend, officials said.
The announcement came Friday during a city council meeting segment introducing Ken Wysocki, the city’s new public works director. Wysocki, on his fifth day in the job, told residents he plans to pursue internal efficiencies and outside partnerships to improve service: “the future is efficiencies and ... where we can leverage outside help and also what do we need to do inside to be more efficient and effective for the community,” he said.
Wysocki said residents who see overflowing trash, broken tree branches or other maintenance issues should call the police department non‑emergency number on weekends and after hours, or contact city staff during the week. The council member on the call also noted that residents may contact a staffer named Yvette for weekday concerns.
The city also announced a Transportation Agency of Monterey County public workshop on the Regional Vision Zero Action Plan set for Thursday, May 22, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Carmel Council Chambers to collect community input. The council’s representative to the agency, identified in the meeting as Mr. Baron, is expected to introduce the topic at the workshop.
Council members briefly flagged other upcoming meetings: an amended housing‑element discussion on Tuesday and a council priorities and budget workshop on Wednesday. No formal votes or policy adoptions were recorded on those items during the segment.
Wysocki said he will be out in the community meeting residents and encouraged people to introduce themselves: “I definitely wanna hear from you, so please share your thoughts and opinions,” he said. The segment closed with the council member thanking staff for arranging extra weekend coverage during the busy visitor season.
Practical details announced in the meeting: one staff member on duty each weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day; porta‑potties and added trash dumpsters placed for Memorial Day weekend at Scenic Avenue and the Del Mar parking lot; and a public workshop on Vision Zero at Carmel Council Chambers on May 22, 4:30–7:30 p.m. The meeting did not specify the year for the May 22 workshop but placed it on the council calendar for the coming week.
