The Walpole School Committee heard student reports May 15 from senior representative Favor and members of the superintendent’s student cabinet, who described senior activities, career-pathway events and several student-led initiatives intended to improve access to extracurriculars and support for incoming freshmen.
Favor, the high school senior representative to the committee, listed upcoming senior events—senior breakfast, senior walk and senior dinner—and summarized end-of-year academic and extracurricular highlights, including AP exams, the speech and debate showcase, the robotics club’s appearance at WAPL Day, a Tri M induction and a Pops Night concert to benefit the Michael Falker Scholarship Fund.
Members of the superintendent’s student cabinet presented the cabinet’s year‑long work across four focus areas: academic initiatives, clubs, student mentorship and the green team. Sarah Macuzzi, a cabinet member, described the cabinet’s role in bringing students from across the district together to shape programming. Zena Girhotra’s academic-initiatives team investigated a computer programming prerequisite for AP computer science. The clubs group, represented by Dylan O’Connell and Ronan McAndrew, proposed a digital club directory and outreach strategies to lower barriers for students who join clubs midyear; Ronan noted outreach to middle-school staff about Best Buddies expansion.
The cabinet’s health and wellness team discussed transition supports from middle to high school, citing survey data used to identify needs such as time-management supports; that team has begun meetings with Principal Ruggiero. The mentorship initiative described by freshman Vanya Singh would pair upperclassmen mentors with freshmen. The green team, described by Rebecca Schmidt and Tommy Kowalski, has restarted sustainability efforts including cafeteria composting outreach, public messaging and a partnership to design a team logo with NHS.
Committee members thanked the students for their presentations, praised the student voice work and encouraged continued engagement. Several committee members noted how student-led proposals had been vetted with staff, and the committee asked the administration to continue supporting student-led efforts.
Speakers at the item included Favor (student representative) and student-cabinet members Sarah Macuzzi, Zena Girhotra, Dylan O’Connell, Ronan McAndrew, Vanya Singh, Rebecca Schmidt and Tommy Kowalski.
