District advisory councils report expanded parent resources, transportation planning and family supports

The Exceptional Student Education advisory council and the District Advisory Council reported outreach, parent training, transportation planning and family resource center expansions during the May 13 meeting.
The Leon County School Board received updates on advisory councils at its May 13 meeting. Sassafras Middleman, chair of the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) advisory council, told the board the council connected parents to regional advocacy and training resources including the Family Network on Disabilities and Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resource Systems. The ESE council covered topics from IEP and 504 planning to transition, guardianship and autism services, and voted in new membership.
District Advisory Council (DAC) chair Jacqueline Colston Steele reported on a multi-advisory meeting (the “MAC”) that combined Title I, ESE, TAC and DAC groups. Steele said the session included the superintendent and drew a large turnout; the council intends to continue annual cross-advisory meetings. Steele also cited ongoing support for family resource centers—including a new Fort Braden site—and said transportation changes planned for next year will be accompanied by town halls and community outreach.
Both advisory groups emphasized parent-led advocacy and improving access to district administrators and resources. Steele announced incoming vice chair Damaris Barrios and said she will pass leadership to Barrios; she also said the council will continue parent engagement through workgroups.
