Council approves two right-of-way abandonments, including Peachtree Street parcel for Milton Housing Authority

The Milton City Council on June 10 unanimously approved two right-of-way abandonment requests.

The first approval concerned a roughly 20-foot-by-100-foot segment adjacent to 5639 Alabama Street. Staff reported the segment “juts out” from the main right-of-way and that owner Tanner Lemon requested the abandonment to permit construction of a permanent driveway that otherwise would be difficult to build. Staff said they had followed the city’s notice procedures for abandonment requests and recommended approval. Councilmember Powell moved to approve the abandonment; the motion passed unanimously.

The second request involved a 50-by-275-foot segment known as Peachtree Street, located between Grama Street and James Street on property formerly occupied by Milton Housing Authority apartment buildings. City staff told the council the parcel is currently vacant and that abandoning the right of way would allow Milton Housing Authority to consolidate two parcels to facilitate future multifamily development. Staff said they had notified abutting property owners and received no objections; they noted irrigation lines serving a community garden cross the right of way but reported no documented utility lines otherwise. A member of the public, Buddy Fisher, asked for clarification about the parcel’s location; council then voted to approve the abandonment unanimously.

If the council’s approvals are recorded as recommended, staff said the city will execute and record quitclaim deeds for the abandoned segments.
