Board discusses revisiting cell-phone policy; sends implementation review to policy committee

Several board members said they want more implementation data and time for newly appointed high-school administrators to apply the district administrative regulations before making substantive policy changes.
Speakers described the district’s administrative regulation as “very restrictive” — prohibiting phone use in class — but noted the AR does not currently spell out enforcement consequences. Board members reported the Yonder pouch pilot at Easton Middle School and said the pilot has been extended to St. Michael’s Middle-High School; district staff said the pilot continues and the district is collecting data on how the pouches are used.
Board members raised concerns about phones’ effects on learning and student well-being; one trustee cited national research on phone-related harms. Others urged caution about repeatedly reopening settled policy items and recommended a timeline for policy review so the board can focus on additional priorities.
The board agreed on several next steps: place the cell-phone policy implementation review on the policy committee docket (policy committee meets the first Wednesday of each month), gather implementation data from principals and teachers (including survey feedback), and run an informational parent outreach campaign about phone use and student well-being. Several trustees suggested returning to the matter in roughly six months if the data warrant more action.
No formal policy change or board vote on policy language occurred during the work session.
