Rowan County Schools officials on a regular school board meeting described a new traveling preschool classroom built from a retired bus and funded by a federal/state grant.
The classroom-on-wheels, called the Fox Mobile, was converted from an off-the-road bus provided by the board and rehabilitated locally. Rowan County preschool staff said the project was supported by a grant from the Office of Special Education and Early Learning at the Kentucky Department of Education and completed with significant volunteer work by a former parent, Casey Berry.
The presentation said the vehicle is a micro preschool classroom designed for about eight to 10 children at a time and intended for community outreach, recruitment and kindergarten-readiness activities. "It's a micro preschool classroom on wheels that will be out in the community starting very soon," said Miss Ingalls, a preschool staff member, according to the meeting transcript. She added the mobile classroom is meant to give families a sample of preschool lessons and activities and to encourage enrollment.
School officials described the project as a year-long effort: the grant was awarded "a little over a year ago," and volunteers and local contractors rehabilitated the bus. "One of our former parents... pretty much outsourced it locally. He did a lot of it himself," a board speaker said, thanking Casey Berry for leading the renovation. Presenters emphasized that the bus will be used for outreach with community partners and could be towed if needed for events.
The board presentation framed the Fox Mobile as a recruiting and service tool: officials said families who are unsure about enrollment could see short lessons and activities and be connected with existing preschool services. No costs, schedule of routes or long-term operating budget were provided during the presentation.
Rowan County officials invited the public to contact preschool staff for tours and further details about routes and enrollment.
