Council approves $872.44 in uncollectible utility write-offs

Staff explained the three accounts were recommended for write-off for separate reasons: the first involved a leak and an account opened by a renter; the property subsequently sold before a lien could be attached. The second account involved an elderly account holder who passed away and the property sold with cash settlement, leaving no collection mechanism. The third account has recent deed transfer activity and staff said they will continue collection attempts but recommended the account be written off now for accounting purposes.
Staff emphasized the city has reduced its uncollectible accounts over time through stricter deposit and disconnect policies, payment options (credit card and phone payments), and leak-notification procedures that help identify and remediate high-usage events.
Quote from the meeting: - “The total balance that we need to look at for write off is $872.44. It's more than I'd like, but it's not bad when you take into consideration how much we collect in a year for water and sewer,” said the presenting staff member.
The council voted to authorize the write-offs. Staff will continue collection attempts on the third account where deed transfer activity was noted.
