Members of Newark’s Conservation Advisory Commission (CAC) told council Monday they have submitted multiple recommendations over the last 18 months and have not seen those items scheduled for council discussion.
CAC Chair Helga Huntley reported four items: a recommendation recognizing climate change impacts on community wellness (sent August 2024), a December 2024 request that staff cost out lighting efficiency upgrades at Phillips Park, a March 2025 request to be involved in major park proposals, and an April 2025 recommendation asking that the planning department include zoning-code sustainability measures in its upcoming task list. Huntley said the commission remains ready to present and help cost out projects and policy changes.
Mayor McDermott responded that council had voted to bring the CAC report to the council for discussion previously and pledged to follow up with staff to identify when a discussion can be scheduled. Council members reiterated support for CAC involvement in planning and parks processes and asked staff to coordinate a date for CAC to present more detailed recommendations.
The council did not take a formal vote on the recommendations but instructed staff to follow up with scheduling and next steps.
