County reviews petition to gate portion of Niles Road near Gypsum; commissioners ask for drone imagery

Saline County staff presented an informational report on June 10 from property owners seeking controlled (gated) access to a half-mile section of Niles Road in the county’s southwest near Gypsum.
The petitioners—William Crawford, Sean Knowles and Lisa Green—own all parcels adjoining the requested section, which runs from the east quarter corner of Section 12 south about 900 feet along the section line and then continues on a tangent curve. County staff said the roadway is a gravel-classified, minimum-maintenance road that ends near a closed wooden bridge about 1,500 feet north of Hedberg Road; petitioners reported repeated illegal dumping and trespass and asked to gate the roadway to reduce those problems.
Road and Bridge staff outlined that if the commission concurs, the adjacent owners would pay the initial cost of gate installation; after installation the county will provide locks and will handle future gate maintenance. The department asked for a consensus to proceed with engineering’s drone flyover and preparation of the formal resolution and required processes (similar to a prior Ottawa Road gating). Commissioners asked clarifying questions about vehicle turnaround points, the closed bridge condition and maintenance expectations. One commissioner requested the drone imagery be completed before a formal action is presented.
Staff will schedule the drone flyover and return to the commission with survey imagery and a draft resolution and cost estimates if the board gives direction to proceed.
