Sawyer County committee receives departmental updates: register of deeds, forestry revenue, DNR liaison introduced

Register of Deeds: The register reported recorded documents for the period matched last year's count at 510 and discussed online subscription services used by title companies and landowners. Transfer fees were lower than the prior year for the period reported but were increasing in June, the register said.
Forestry: County forestry staff provided a brief report after an abbreviated written submittal. For May, forestry listed 13 active timber sales; contractors were working in areas not restricted by oak-wilt rules. May revenue was just over $80,000 and year-to-date revenue was approximately $780,000, which staff said is on track with the year's revenue estimate. The forestry office has five ATV rehabilitation projects out for bid with a proposal deadline of July 2; contractors are given a two-year window to complete those projects.
Wisconsin DNR: The DNR reported the county's wildfire season eased after mid-May rains; only a couple fires totaling about 8 acres were recorded for the month. The DNR introduced Craig Morris as its new county forest liaison; Morris said he joined the position about a week and a half earlier and previously worked with the Forest Service around Hayward.
Recreational trails: The Sawyer County Snowmobile Alliance reported closing out its fiscal year on June 28 and continuing trail grooming, signing and project wrap-up; the alliance said it expects to seek funding for up to five projects next year.
Land records and county survey: Committee members noted written reports in the packet from the county surveyor and land records office; no additional questions were raised at the meeting.
