Thurston regional planners remove Log Cabin Road from RTP as studies are retained for later review

A commissioner reported June 10 that the Thurston Regional Planning Council (TRPC) has recommended removing the Log Cabin Road project from the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) while retaining required studies assessing the connection’s traffic impacts for future decision making.
The commissioner said the Log Cabin Road removal had been proposed by the City of Olympia and noted prior modeling used in the county’s Yonge Highway project (completed in 2012) assumed the Log Cabin connection would be constructed. The TRPC recommendation, the commissioner said, leaves the engineering and traffic studies in the RTP so future analyses can determine whether the connection remains necessary.
The recommendation will move next to the Transportation Policy Board for review, the update said. Commissioners said the studies have not been updated since the early 2000s and would need to be completed if the project is to be reconsidered.
No formal county action or vote on the RTP item was recorded at the meeting; the report was delivered as part of commissioners’ external board updates.
