Resident asks Marysville to improve accessibility at Lakeside fields and parking; council says parks committee will consider

A long-time Marysville resident described serious difficulty accessing Lakeside ball fields, telling the council the steps and rock approaches make it hazardous for people using crutches or wheelchairs and asking the city to consider installing ramps and improving handicap parking.

The resident said she regularly attends youth games but must “crawl up two steps” to reach bleachers, that the rock surface prevents safe use of walkers or wheelchairs and that existing handicap parking is often blocked by large vehicles even when legally parked. She also told the council she had checked legal requirements and believes federal law requires parks and ballparks to be accessible; she said she had “all the numbers and everything” but did not provide statutory citations during her remarks.

City officials responded that the parks and recreation committee would be an appropriate forum to address the concerns and that staff will take the comment under advisement. Councilors noted the committee has not met recently and suggested the item could be added to a committee agenda for further study.

A related parks point came from Emily Rockwell, chair of the youth city council, who asked staff to consider adding trash cans along alcohol-consumption lines at the recent Big Blue River Days event.
