School committee reviews medical marijuana administration and new professional-conduct policy for staff

The South Kingstown School Committee reviewed (first reading) two policies on June 11: a medical marijuana administration policy required by state law and a proposed professional conduct code governing staff interactions with students.
Committee members said the medical marijuana policy follows state law and is essentially a templated policy adapting state requirements to the district. The superintendent confirmed the district's legal counsel reviewed the policy.
The professional-conduct-with-students policy was developed by the policy subcommittee using language drawn from a number of neighboring districts. Superintendent Pedraza and subcommittee members said the draft focuses on boundaries, reporting protocols and protections for both students and staff. The draft covers employees, volunteers and vendors and is intended to be included in employee orientation and the staff handbook. The subcommittee said the policy will be revised based on committee feedback and will return to the full committee for a future reading and possible approval.
Both policies were presented as reads; legal review was completed before the meeting and the committee asked for input from members before the next formal vote.
