School committee appoints Ashley Kelsey Schiray as Woburn recreation commission representative

The Woburn School Committee on June 10 interviewed five public applicants and voted to appoint Ashley Kelsey Schiray as the committee’s representative to the Woburn Recreation Commission.
The appointment followed public, live interviews in which each committee member asked one question of each candidate. Chair Ellen Crowley opened the interviews and explained the selection criteria: alignment with the recreation director’s mission to “promote the health and welfare of citizens of Woburn by providing a safe, affordable, and most importantly, enjoyable recreation program” and alignment with the Woburn Public Schools’ strategic plan.
Candidates described priorities that included expanding adaptive and inclusive programming and strengthening outreach. Amy Klennick, introduced herself as a lifelong Woburn resident who has worked in the Woburn Recreation Department and now coaches locally; she said, “I think Woburn is right now lacking a little bit of the adaptive and inclusive programs that we have,” and described wanting accessible play structures and inclusive programing for children with disabilities. Ashley Kostein Shirey, who introduced herself as director of recreation at Colleges of the Fenway and a longtime coach, emphasized retention and outreach to bring families into programs: “I think you have to get out there. You have to be egregious. Maybe you go to the library and you hold some forums. Maybe you have a pop-up farmer’s market.”
After members scored candidates and deliberated, the committee made a roll-call vote to appoint Ashley Kelsey Schiray. The roll call recorded support from all present members: Mister Austin, Miss Chisholm, Miss Cormier, Mister Lipset, Mister Morenen, Miss Wetzel and Miss Crowley. Chair Crowley announced, “The will of the committee is to appoint Miss Ashley Kelsey Schiray to the Recreation Commission,” and said she will contact the appointee with next steps.
The committee noted that the appointment fulfills the school committee’s charter obligation to name a representative to the Recreation Commission and that the administration provided no recommendation. The public interview and scoring sheets were recorded as public documents.
